Richmond Hill is a city in Bryan County, Georgia southwest of Savannah, Georgia.  It is about a 30-minute commute from Richmond Hill to Savannah.  There are a number of planned developments east and outside of the city of Richmond Hill. The entire South Bryan area depends on Richmond Hill city for basic services.  Leaving Bryan County you must travel through Richmond Hill via U.S. 17 or I-95.

Bryan County contains marshes, riverfronts, ocean coastlines, and Fort McAllister Historic Park.  Fort McAllister is a 1725-acre park on the south bank of the Ogeechee River and the Atlantic Ocean.   The Census counts Bryan County as part of the Savannah Metropolitan area.  It is a suburb of Savannah Georgia even though it is in another county, Chatham.  Savannah has one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States including Victorian District, Cuyler-Brownsville District, Thomas Square, Pin point Historic District, and 22 park like squares only 30 minutes away from Richmond Hill.  Savannah is an industrial center and important seaport and is Georgia’s third largest metropolitan area.  Savannah is on the Savannah River, near the U.S. Intracoastal Waterway.  Georgia has nationally recognized musical art festival is Savannah Music Festival, which is not to be missed, as it is one of the best music festivals in the world.

Richmond HillRichmond Hill’s goals of preservation of historic resources and land set up the J.F. Gregory Park.  JF Gregory Park is a 335- acre multi-use recreational area.  It houses the Veterans Monument, Wetland Education Center, 2 restored Henry Ford Homes, Nature Trails, 10-Acre Lake, Fishing, Hiking,  A Bird Tower, Birding Trail, Bike Trails, Covered Pavilion,  and is where Richmond Hill host “The Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival.” 

There are a number of Historical sites in and around Richmond Hill, area and even more can be found in Georgia’s low county where Savannah is located.  Here are examples of some of the historical sites within the Richmond Hill area.  Some historical sites include many other fun family activities.

J.F. Gregory Park - ¬The park  encompassed one of many prosperous rice plantations, which fed confederate soldiers which was attacked and captured  by Union in 1864.  Eventually Henry Ford purchased the land in 1925 as his winter home.  The park was named after Henry Ford’s plantation foreman.

Fort McAllister Historical Park - The park contains a museum specializing in artifacts of the Civil War, a earthwork fortification from the Confederacy (which did not fall until 1864 with General Sherman’s “March to the Sea”), and giant live oaks and a large salt marsh.  It also has camping facilities, cabins, picnic shelters, pioneer camping, hiking trails, boat ramps, and a kid’s playground.  They host a Fishing tournament (King mackerel and Kingfish Classic) Sea kayak Races, and a Sanctuary Classic photo contest!
