Personal SEO ~ Website Marketing and Content Writing: Do Your Listings Show as Content?

Do Your Listings Show as Content?

This is huge! Ever wonder why you find other agents and brokerages above your site when all they have is listings and NO CONTENT? It can be infuriating when you feel you've put so much into a great community page only to have another site beat you out of the top 10 on Google with nothing!

There are a few reasons this could be the case but one of the biggest is showing listings as content.

Google doesn't know what it's looking at when scanning your site so you have to tell it. If it's a script or code that frames in the content, Google won't see the page as content and therefore will have light or thin content. We can alter this by adding more content, internal and external links and images with tags to tell Google what it's looking at but if all the listings for a certain area also show as content, that's almost going to beat out a well-written page any day.

Now, if your site shows the listings as content AND listings change almost daily, that means that the content is being refreshed and updated every day making Google pleased with your site and in turn, will tend to rank it higher on the search engines.

Do you know if your IDX solution shows as content?

There are many out there that do, but some that don't. We are constantly working on our client's sites to make sure they have the best possible SEO-practices and sometimes that means switching things up from time to time. If an IDX solution does not stay on top of the trends and changes we may recommend switching to a better solution.

But there are different solutions for different folks. Not every IDX solution works in every area of North America so having an arsenal of options that all provide different options is really the key. We may have a better solution recommendation based on your area that cheaper, works better and is more SEO-friendly.

For instance, in Florida, we have a client that needs information from three different MLSs but the solution she started with only offered one and she had to purchase multiple IDX solutions for it to work. We researched and were able to recommend a better IDX solution that incorporated all three MLSs for a much cheaper monthly fee, and they now all show as content.

Now, I'm really talking about sites like Wordpress where you get a plug-in from your IDX provider and pop it into the site. Other sites that offer full websites like Sierra, Real Geeks, REW, Boomtown, Etc... have an all-in-one system but it's still important to know if the listings show as content. If you're not sure, ask! If they don't, this may be the push they need to get on the ball with the rest of us.

We have swapped out dozens of sites and reworked thousands of pages just so this little piece of the SEO puzzle would work better and the sites would rank better.

But of course, this is one small piece. Internal linking, backlinks, great content, etc.. all add to the authority, time on page, site speed and more of a well-optimized website but if your site offers listings, this is one that should not be ignored.

Hi Tammy Emineth,

This is good information and those who do not have a good understanding of SEO should get with you for an analysis of their website.

Tammy Emineth finding the right web site company that can help with the IDX part is hard to do. We tried the WordPress site and found it very cumbersome to use.

I found using IDX was not beneficial, no one was using it. So, I changed over and use a link to our company site for searching the MLS, but I recently heard that using Real Scout may be an even better way. Of course i don't know if any of these showed as content or not.

You know, there actually is an agent locally that ONLY has the listings on each subdivision/community page.  No content that I've ever seen, and yet those pages do rank.

I think mine does for the most part. Experiment with multiple media and keep it moving.

Hi Tammy Emineth, great blog! Having listings that are indexable by Google is a no brainer. You have all this information on your site. Why wouldn't you want it to count toward your page rank? :)

My hopes are that who i choose to publich my various web sites are taking care of the SEO as well. A hard lesson to learn years ago and now to ask those questions before purchasing anything

I'm curious why DIY web management agents get upset when the competition has greater visibility? Why not employ a professional to manage their website and concentrate on selling because time is priceless isn't it?

Hi Tammy... excellent information. I suspect there are a lot of agents out there who don't understand this distinction.

In addition to an IDX that will index content, we build a custm web page for each listng. Typically, we use the propert address as the title of the web page.
This seems to help a bit. :)

Tammy,

Why would you want the listings to show as content when everyone on the MLS is using the same property description thus creating a duplicate content conundrum?

Coming up in a search... it is not just the words that get you on top in the indexing. Images that are sized, optimized and shot right come up in searches. So do videos and more than words to herd and ring the bell consistently. Love your posts that inspire Tammy Emineth ! All AR appreciates them and it's like a GI on the other side of the globe getting mail from home when you hunt and peck and post.
